HEATHER WELLER, PUBLIC RELATIONS
Heather is a 4th year and Questbridge Scholar in the college, pursuing a Public Policy Major with a minor in Human Rights. She is also doing the dual BA/MPP program, so she is also a first year masters student at the Harris School of Public Policy. As Director of Public Relations (PR) and Special Events, Heather has connected the MVA to the Veterans in our community that we serve through a project called "Thank a Veteran". Heather started this project in 5th grade after visiting her Great Uncle at a veteran's home and talking with the veterans there, realizing the huge sacrifices that they have made and the thanks that they deserved. Heather started by collecting messages of thanks from her school and hand making cards for every resident of the home. She decided that wasn't enough, so she started an email campaign to collect more messages of thanks, and over the years, she has partnered with various organizations such as Project New Hope and Quilts of Valor. When she went to college, she didn't just want her project to end, so she connected with MVA to expand her project and help MVA reach more towards its goal of working directly with those they serve. Over the years, over 80,000 messages of thanks from all 50 states and 8 different countries have been collected! Heather is very engaged in the community as she serves in leadership positions in the Office of Civic Engagement, the Center for College Student Success, UChicago Peer Mentor Program, the Socioeconomic Diversity Alliance, Partnership for the Advancement of Refugee Rights, Women in Public Policy, and Cheerleading. She is also involved in organizations such as Harris Community Action and Supplies for Dreams, and serves on the Student Government's Academic Committee at Harris.
